Monarch was formerly known as Leisenring No. 3. The patch of houses was built in 1886 and owned by the Connellsville Coke & Iron Company until the mines were taken over in 1890 by H.C. Frick Coke Company. The mine was idle from 1928 until World War II, then was abandonded completely in 1961. Monarch VFD was incorporated in June of 1956 to serve the company houses of the patch and has been in service ever since, growing to include over 30 active members, 4 trucks and a social hall. |
